Nine-times Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova feels it is time for the game’s ‘grunters’ to be told they have to tone it down.
A number of the top women players regularly shriek when they hit the ball, with 2004 Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova at the top of the decibel league when it comes to grunting.Â
Russian star Elena Dementieva complained about her opponent’s noise level after losing to Sharapova at this year’s tournament in SW19 and Navratilova believes she was well within her rights to raise the issue. Â “They should outlaw it,” she told BBC Radio. “It’s really unfair to the opponent and it’s terrible for the public.
“At the net, you need to hear the ball hit the racket so that you know how fast it’s travelling.”Â
